Acid Reflux Foods to Avoid: Diet Tips

Acid reflux disease is the common name given to gastro esophageal reflux disease, or GERD.  Acid reflux is characterized by liquid contents of the stomach "backing up" into the esophagus.  This liquid, contains acids and pepsin (an enzyme) from the stomach that are normally utilized in the process of digestion. In addition, the liquid that is "regurgitated" into the esophagus may contain bile that has been backed up into the stomach from the small intestines.

These fluids, particularly stomach acids, can damage and irritate the lining of the esophagus, a condition known as esophagitis, while also causing heartburn-like symptoms that many people associate with acid reflux.

Diet is very important in controlling acid reflux and in particular, certain foods should be avoided.
