What Are The Symptoms Of Acid Reflux?

Symptoms of Acid Reflux

Acid reflux disease has two main symptoms:

  • Heartburn. Nerve fibers in the esophagus are stimulated when acid backs up into the esophagus. This stimulation results in what is commonly referred to as “heartburn” – a burning pain in the center of the chest. Heartburn may start high in the abdomen or may even extend up in to the sufferer’s neck. A portion of  heartburn sufferers will complain with sharp, pressure like pain as opposed to a burning sensation; this pain often mimics the pain of angina (heart pain). A small number of those with heartburn may feel the pain of the condition extend into the back. Heartburn in acid reflux sufferers is common after meals and when individuals lie down.
  • Regurgitation. Refluxed liquid from the stomach can travel up the esophagus and into the mouth, causing unpleasant regurgitation. Like the LES muscle on the lower part of the esophagus, the upper esophageal sphincter or UES is a muscle on the upper part of the esophagus that works to prevent contents from the esophagus from getting into the throat. When regurgitated liquid or food somehow bypass the UES, an acid
taste in the mouth is common.
